BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY (BHRT)

Bio-identical hormones have been available for years, yet most medical practitioners are unschooled in their use.  Linda Haggard, PA-C is well versed in the detection of hormone deficiencies and the science of prescribing bio-identical hormones for both women and men.  Bio-identical hormones are plant-derived and formulated to replicate the same molecular structure as the hormones made by our own bodies. Drug companies can’t patent a plant derived bio-identical product, so they have developed and market high cost synthetic hormones.

At Sedona Integrative Medical Clinic, we have had great success with an individualized approach to BHRT. We begin with essential laboratory testing of a patient’s current hormone levels. When warranted, we then prescribe a precise dosage of patient specific bio-identical hormones including estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, and/or DHEA.  This prescription is then prepared at a registered compounding pharmacy. Each of our patients is monitored carefully through regular follow-up visits and lab testing to ensure that she or he gets the symptom relief and benefits that come from optimal hormone replacement at the lowest possible dosages.

How do you know if you might need BHRT?  Typical symptoms of someone needing hormone therapy include generalized fatigue, mood swings, hot flashes, muscle loss, fat gain and sleeplessness.  The great appeal of bio-identical hormones is that they are natural and our bodies can metabolize them easily. Synthetic hormones, in contrast, are often “overkill” and can potentially produce multiple side effects including breast cancer and coronary artery disease.
